Dogs
Dog theft in the UK was over 2500 in 2020, increasing by as much as 19% yearly. These numbers are just estimates and what is reported. The numbers may be a lot higher. The covid pandemic seems to have made the problem worse, with people spending more time at home a dog becomes good company and a friend. The rise in popularity and doubling prices for designer dogs and covid makes theft of dogs a lucrative money source with criminals who are prepared to go to any means to steal your family friend. Breaking into your home, climbing into your garden and even dogs being snatched whilst being on their daily walks. Some never to be seen again, so it is important to have your dogs microchipped and registered on a database. Since 2016 it is a criminal offence not to register your dog, with fines of £500 for non-compliance. Remember to keep your microchip data base company informed of any changes.
Cats
From the 10th of june 2024 all cats in England over 20 weeks of age must be microchipped and registered on a compliant database unless exempt or free living, As with dogs there is a black market in cats and more so in designer cats. Many owners allow their cats to roam. Being agile and excellent climbers can cause a big problem in ownership of your cat, with some people believing a cat that visits them regularly has been abandoned, in many cases this is far from the truth and causes ownership disputes and arguments. The microchipping law for cats should stop this so it is important to get your cat or kitten microchipped and registered on a microchip database. Remember it is important to keep the cats microchip details up to date by informing your microchip database of any changes.
Be careful with your pets. Don’t allow your dogs to wander without your knowledge and report any missing to your local council who are as normal practice in touch with local dogs and animal sanctuaries.
As normal practice animal and dog sanctuaries will scan for a microchip in your pets and get all the owner’s details from the microchipping companies therefore microchipping your pet is so important.
